Cultures

Coconut Water Kefir Recipe

Cultures are used to start the fermentation process and the cultures to make water kefir are called water kefir grains. You can’t make water kefir without either the kefir grains or a kefir starter.

  • Live Organic Water Kefir Grains – These are the same ones I bought over a year ago and they have been making delicious, healthy water kefir for me since.  What’s great about buying kefir grains that are alive is that you can get started with them immediately.  When you purchase them freeze dried there is an activation period that can take a few weeks before you can start drinking water kefir.
  •  Body Ecology Kefir Starter – You can buy kefir starter from Body Ecology instead of purchasing the live kefir grains. You can also make coconut water kefir from this starter too. This is good for people who are fermenting foods for the first time or don’t want the maintenance of taking care of the kefir grains.

Kitchen Tools

  • Nylon Mesh Strainer  for straining the kefir grains from the liquid. Metal can be harmful to kefir grains so it is best to use a strainer made with a different material like plastic or nylon.

 Jars & Bottles

Orange Kefir Soda Pop. Inspired by nature, good health and bubbles! This recipe is so simple, only needs two ingredients and is kid approved.

These are the bottles and jars I use frequently when making water kefir.

  • Quart Size Mason Jar for fermenting. I use this size all of the time.
  • Plastic wide mouth mason jar lids. I use these instead of the metal lids most of the time, because the metal rusts.
  • Flip-top glass bottles -I have many flip top glass bottles to store the water kefir in during secondary fermentation. I have some Kilner bottles and they hold in the carbonation very well.
